Are you looking for something fun to do with your spare time? Are you interested in local history, the greater story of California, historic buildings, or the opportunity to volunteer with like minded individuals? If so, please consider volunteering at the Museum of History Benicia. We are needing to grow our volunteer department in general, but are most ardently in need of Gallery Attendants. Duties include, but are not limited to: answering generic questions, simple gift shop, and ticketing sales. Be part of an exciting team and see just where our museum is heading. Even if you aren't available at the standard time/shifts, please apply anyway. We are looking to be able to expand our hours of volunteer coverage and you might be the perfect fit. Please visit https://mohbenicia.org/support/volunteers/ for more and to fill out our volunteer application. Please feel free to email us directly at b.lloyd@mohbenicia.org

The Museum of History Benicia (MoHB) is a small history museum that focuses on the history of California as told within the story of Benicia. The Museum focuses on the introduction of the earliest human immigrants to North America, specifically, the geographic areas surrounding the Carquinez Strait, the Tips beginning roughly 13,000 years ago and moving through the Spanish Colonial, Mexican Colonial, and Rancho Periods as well as the California Gold Rush, California and the Civil War, and the development, growth, and ultimately closing of the Benicia Arsenal so much more. MoHB is not your average local history museum. It is an actively collecting and growing institution that only recently opened a Downtown location. At almost 40 years old, MoHB is a vibrant and active community partner that brings history to life through education programs, both in person and virtually and provides a space for willing learners to experience the complex and multifaceted history of our amazing state through a hands-on approach to education and public outreach. MoHB isn't all history, however, it's a venue for fun monthly programming and events for the whole family - from First Friday events every month to reading programs for our youngest visitors, MoHB has something for everyone. Set in four of the original remaining Benicia Arsenal Military buildings (built between 1854 and 1857) and one former firehouse in downtown Benicia, MoHB has three galleries in the Arsenal complex that address state history from its ancient past to 1900, the military presence in the Arsenal, and the unique history of one of California's oldest fire departments, and Downtown that addresses local history, specific to both Benicia and the State of California from 1900 - 1970. MoHB is currently seeking members to serve on our Board of Directors, Growing institutions need a strong group of active champions and dedicated supporters and MoHB is in search of both. The pandemic brought many changes to MoHB, and in most cases the pandemic reset was actually very beneficial to the institution, allowing for a complete overhaul of the programs and business model as well as setting the groundwork for a complete rebranding of the institution. In light of those changes, the Board underwent a complete rework as well and has successfully transitioned from a working board to a very traditional governing board. With the major changes complete, or nearing so, it has become increasingly necessary that the Board complete its progression as well. Responsibilities Board members are part of MoHBs leadership. Through fiscal support, Board members serve as an inspirational example and benchmark to donors in charitable giving as well as in volunteering their time, knowledge, and expertise. Board members set the standard for the Museum’s fundraising programs and success. Board members are required to demonstrate their support for the activities of the Museum by making significant annual personal contributions to the Museum consistent with the member’s ability. Participation above and beyond the financial and fund-raising support is always desired. Numerous direct and in-kind support opportunities exist, such as providing sponsorships for special events or programs, making gifts to restricted accounts or special campaigns, and donating goods and services to MoHB's silent auction. Board members will actively participate in the activities of the Museum and the Board. As members, they should be prepared for and attend all regular Board meetings. Attend and actively participate in Board Orientation Programs, Board Retreats, or other strategic planning or educational sessions. Actively participate on one or more Board committees and/or provide other volunteer service. Regularly attend and participate in the Museum’s programs and events, such as exhibitions, lectures, classes, and receptions. Actively promote audience development by inviting and bringing guests to the Museum, Museum functions, programs, and events throughout the year, and be an ambassador for, and public advocate in support, of MoHB. Qualifications Board members are obligated to undertake activities that further the mission and engage the community in supporting the Museum. MoHB Board seats are conferred based on a broad spectrum of qualifications, not solely on financial capacity or generosity. However, expectations for Board service do include making a personal financial commitment, and through the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors. Board Member Attributes include but are not limited to their ability and willingness to personally support the Museum financially at a "leadership" level that demonstrates the Board member’s passion and enthusiasm. Prove a demonstrated interest in the mission of MoHB, and be an active supporter and member of the Museum. Provide professional expertise as needed. Abide by the Museum’s Board Conflict of Interest Policy. Members as expected to serve the Museum as a whole, rather than special interest groups. Maintain independence and objectivity, and do what fairness, ethics, and personal integrity dictate. Never accept or offer substantive favors or gifts from or to anyone who does business with the organization.
