Mission Statement

The vision of Urban Business Support (UrbanBiz) is "development without displacement." We recognize the benefits of economic development in low-income communities, but we aim to curb the negative impacts of gentrification, namely small business displacement and uneven distribution of investment capital. Our mission is to provide local business owners the resources necessary to retain diversity of business ownership in economically developing neighborhoods. UrbanBiz provides business, personal finance, and leadership education to existing small businesses in neighborhoods that are currently or on the verge of experiencing gentrification. The skills UrbanBiz imparts provide the tools for existing small businesses to adapt, survive, and grow in the changing marketplace emerging around them.

Description

A Tacoma-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Urban Business Support provides business skills education, personal and business financial literacy, leadership development, and mentorship to small businesses in gentrifying neighborhoods. These skills prepare business owners to be effective entrepreneurs and community leaders who create self-sufficient jobs and grow businesses and institutions that contribute to the economic vitality and social diversity of their communities.
