Mission Statement

SALEF’s mission is to promote the civic participation and representation of the Salvadoran and other Latino communities in the U.S., promote the economic development and democracy in El Salvador, as well as to advocate for its economic, educational, and political advancement and growth. SALEF promotes giving back to our communities, thus scholarship recipients are expected to complete community service hours and receipt of the scholarship award is dependent on completion of their pledge. Throughout the years, we have brought awareness to the Latino community of the importance of becoming naturalized citizens. It is vital to increase the Latino voice in the political and electoral process.

Description

Since SALEF's founding in 1995 by a group of Salvadoran immigrants and activists, one of its prominent goals has been to provide educational assistance to Salvadoran, Central American, and other Latino students. Since then our organization has evolved to better service our communities with a DOJ-accredited immigration program, youth hire/paid internship program, migrant youth housing program, efforts in civic engagement and advocacy. When the pandemic forced our doors closed, we had to shut down and re-imagine how SALEF can continue with our work, while adapting to a needing community. This is when our COVID-19 Response Team developed. BIPOC communities were disproportionately impacted and we had to take action. Within weeks we created programs tackling food accessibility and COVID-19.
More than a year later with our COVID-19 rapid response plans and our programs continue to grow. We couldn't have done it without the support of our partners and community. Our office serves as a testing site every Wednesday. And we set-up COVID-19 pop-up vaccine sites all over L.A. County.
