Virtual Opportunity
Solana Center's science-based school programs inspire and empower students to live sustainably, to reduce and rethink waste, and to become change-makers on their campuses and in their communities. Their presentations primarily take place at underserved schools. At the Solana Center's school programs, volunteers help them engage their students through interactive composting demonstrations (sometimes handling live worms!), teach sustainable practices that support a healthy planet, and inspire students to adopt sustainable practices in their own lives. Volunteers help set up the demo site, support the educator through advancing slides or the flip chart, engage students, and break down the demo site. Volunteers may answer questions related to the presentation topic if they are comfortable doing so. Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes Time Commitment: Minimum of 5 hours per month (roughly equivalent to 1 school program) Onboarding Process: The volunteer coordinator will schedule a brief virtual interview to make sure you understand the requirements, and then you are free to explore the Solana Center's list of opportunities. It is very important that you check your email, as additional onboarding information that is dependent on the volunteer opportunity will be sent to them there. Schools usually require proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Required Skills/Experience: Previous composting or environmental education experience and passion for sustainable topics OR working knowledge of compost are a must for this volunteer opportunity. Desired Skills/Experience: Good interpersonal skills are a plus. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds to help with set up and break down. Volunteers will be expected to follow the COVID-19 protocol of each school they visit. Attire: Appropriate for schools; clothes to move around in/get a little dirty in (composting). Keep in mind you will be standing for extended periods of time, so wear comfortable shoes. Location: This opportunity takes place at schools throughout San Diego County. Help run the Solana Center's Food Cycle Program, turning food waste into a high-quality soil supplement, and closing the loop of organic waste! Volunteers help process and tabulate incoming organic material, maintain compost piles, and prep buckets to be returned to program members for more collection. This project is great for those that are not sensitive to the "ick" factor and want to get VERY hands on with waste reduction! All levels of experience are welcome! The Food Cycle Program is a co-op where San Diego County residents and small businesses preserve their organic waste using the Bokashi method and then deliver it to Solana Center to be turned into a nutritious soil amendment that is distributed back into the community. This process reduces tons of waste sent to the landfill, reduces methane pollution, and creates a healthy soil supplement for San Diego gardens! Project Requirements & Important Notes Attire: Wear clothes to get dirty in! Gloves will be provided but feel free to bring your own. Bring: Reusable water bottle. Snacks will be provided. Physical Ability: Must be willing to do hands-on work with worms and other compost critters! Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and be able to be physically active for 3 hours (but with lots of breaks!). This is a smelly event! Volunteers should be ok with the smell of food waste. Note: All volunteers under the age of 18 must be registered on the Solana Center website by a parent or guardian. Help Solana Center run their store and deliver their great programs to the public! The Solana Center store, open twice a week, is a chance for volunteers to get involved with their programs from their home base. Although responsibilities may change with any needs that may arise, in this role volunteers will assist Solana Center staff with setup and/or breakdown of staging areas for their programs (e-waste collection, rain barrel distribution, Food Cycle bucket exchange, and curbside pickup of composting supplies), direct customers to fill out appropriate forms for e-waste collection and Food Cycle bucket exchanges, verify order information for customers picking up composting supplies and direct them to item pickup. Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes Attire: Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. Please dress appropriate to the weather as you will be outside. Bring: Reusable water bottle, work gloves if you prefer to use your own. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, be comfortable talking with the public with a customer service approach, and preferably have some familiarity with Solana Center. If you are new to Solana Center, please let their staff know when you arrive. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. If you are unable to lift 20 pounds but would like to volunteer, please communicate with Jessi in advance at volunteer@solanacenter.org for alternative options. Note: All volunteers under the age of 18 must have their parent/legal guardian fill out the registration form on their behalf.
