Mission Statement

As volunteers, our purpose is to preserve and promote the gardens at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land, and to support people in need in our community with produce grown in Fr. Francis’ garden, in keeping with the Franciscan tradition.

Description

Since 2014, the Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild (FMGG) has harvested and donated gratis27 tons of vegetable produce to non-profit organizations in the metro DC area for those who need food. FMGG is the steward of the Franciscan Monastery's 106-year- old restored Metropolitan cast iron greenhouse, orchard with 70 fruit trees from Casey Trees, apiary with 30 bee hives, 10-acre meadow, and 2-acre urban farm.

With the expansion of the urban farm for the 2021 vegetable produce season to address the increased food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are volunteer opportunities to work directly on the urban farm for increasing the vegetable produce harvest for donation, bookkeeping, and administration.
