Mission Statement
Who We Are
Southeast Ohio Youth Mentoring (formerly Big Brothers Big Sisters) formed in 1986 to provide children facing adversity with enduring, professionally-supported relationships that change their lives for the better.
What We Do
Our programming is built upon a mentorship model; all volunteers are professionally screened, reference-checked, interviewed and trained. Furthermore, all adult mentors are fully background-checked and undergo a home visitation to ensure safe and appropriate living conditions. A national impact study found that children matched with mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates were 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52% less likely to skip school. Our own data confirm these positive outcomes and we intend to follow their standards as an independent agency.
What We Offer the Community
We offer programs to support children and families in SE Ohio
* Community-Based Mentoring - Adults are paired with children 5-17 in positive, supported matches.
* Youth in Leadership - High school students are paired with at-risk elementary students in weekly meetings and activities.
* Before/After School Program - Students at West Elementary School have a supervised fee-based program to assist parents in the district with child care needs.
* Special Activities - We hold holiday parties, host free activities (e.g., swimming at the Community Center, Aquatic Center in Marietta, and Nelsonville Pool; mini-golf; football and baseball tickets, etc.) for program participants.
Description
We are looking for caring adults who want to support children in their emotional, social, psychological and academic development by providing them with a positive role model. At a minimum, we look for someone who will give at least one hour/week and commit to a minimum of a year.
