Mission Statement
Dominion Life Mentoring Services Program is a 501 (c) 3 faith-based community outreach resource center and organization. It was established in 2008 to help at-risk youth and their families overcome hardships in their lives. DLM Mentoring Services Program is designed to empower youth and families through collaborative partnerships in the fields of education, arts & entertainment, business, government, media, religion, and family. We work in conjunction with all stakeholders in local school personnel, child and family services agencies, probation officers, judges, parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts who play a part in growth and development and advancement of a child.
DLM Mentoring Services Program, with its experience staff, has worked for over (8) eight years with youth and their families to provide them with integrity and godly character. DLM and its qualified team have helped and inspired over 500 youth in the New Orleans area to elevate their leadership skills, behavior and attitudes to the betterment of the youth and family. We have impacted the lives of over 1000 youth in schools, detention centers, and churches in Iberville, Ascension, and East Baton Rouge parishes. Our goal is to make a positive impact for positive change on the lives of youth and their families in all 64 parishes by 2018.
DLM's Mentoring Services Program is based upon "The Mentoring Conversation" model. This model is centered on learning theories that are aimed at facilitating self-development. It is based on four questions:
1. Where am I now?
2. Where do I want to be?
3. How do I get there?
4. How am I doing?
Essential Functions:
1. Provide mentoring service to at-risk youth 12-18 years, 2 to 4 Hours each month for up to 6 months.
2. Pass a screening process that includes an interview and background check.
3. Develop and maintain positive relationships with assigned youth and their family.
4. Provide counseling, advocacy, and crisis intervention.
5. Prepare and implement Individualized Service Plan of Care on assigned youth and family.
6. Attend and participate in scheduled training sessions.
7. Follow all agency policies and procedures in the provision of service to assigned youth.
8. This position requires a high school diploma or equivalency and a desire to mentor at-risk youth.
What is a Mentor
A mentor is defined as a wise and trusted teacher and counselor. Mentors are role models, friends, good listeners, and most of all, caring adults willing to volunteer to help a young person succeed. Mentors assist mentees by listening to mentees' problems or concerns, providing advice on decisions such as education and job opportunities. Mentors also are mandated reporters - this means they have a responsibility to report knowledge of abuse.
