Mission Statement
Fairmont Area Kinship improves lives by establishing quality relationships between individuals and caring volunteers for the purpose of promoting stability, support, friendship and healthy community through mentoring.
What is Kinship mentoring?
Kinship is a non-profit organization that matches children ages five through 15 years old with caring adult volunteers throughout Martin County.
Kinship matches men with boy mentees and women with girl mentees, and couples or families may be mentors to either gender.
Mentors are thoroughly screened and then matched with a mentee based on common interests, hobbies, activities, and personalities.
Mentors and mentees are expected to meet together a minimum of 2 times a month for a minimum of 3 - 6 hours a month. Time spent together can be on weekends, evenings, or whenever works for both mentor and mentee! Mentors commit to mentoring for at least one year, but matches often last much longer.
The time commitment is not much but it can make a huge difference to a child!
What do Kinship mentors and mentees do together?
We encourage low-cost or free activities such as:
Playing board games or cards
Cooking dinner or baking cookies
Going for a bike ride, hike, walk, or going to the park
Making a craft or building something
Playing with pets
Going fishing or boating
Fixing your car or doing house repairs
Going to a movie, athletic event, or concert
Planting a garden or doing yardwork
Playing catch or shooting hoops
Learning how to play piano or guitar
Including them in everyday activities
Just having fun!
