Mission Statement
VISION for LLT: To provide mentoring relationships for court-involved youth in Memphis and Shelby County that will promote the following achievements: retention in school, regular advancement in grade level to graduation, post-secondary education and enrollment in occupational trades leading to certification, employment opportunities, and to encourage a faith-based lifestyle free from a life of crime
MISSSION for LLT: To provide, build, and establish life on life relationships between court-involved youth and community leaders, business professionals, and individuals living a faith-based lifestyle in order to break the destructive cycle of youth crime through Christ-centered intervention.
We are a hybrid mentoring program.
Description
Supportive: Encourages the mentee to take risks that are reasonable under the circumstances and that will result in the mentee's professional and personal development.
Nurturing: Creates a "risk free" environment whereby the mentee can share with the mentor the issues that are most critical to him/her knowing that it will only be utilized to aid in the mentee's development.
Honest in Feedback: Provides necessary feedback, which allows the mentee to know what they are doing well and what areas can be further developed for success.
Understands Boundaries: Is able to set limits with the mentee and also understand that the mentor's job is not to create a clone of the mentor but to share knowledge and information that can be useful to the mentee as they develop in their own unique way.
Balanced Perspective: Brings a realistic viewpoint in discussions with the mentee.
Open Minded: Willing to consider new ideas.
Great Listener: Active listening is essential. A mentor must understand, interpret, evaluate, and then react to what a mentee is saying. This calls for mentors to be great listeners.
Person of Integrity: Develops trust in the mentor/mentee relationship. Moral commitment, and the willingness to do what's right is positive role model behavior.
Dependable: JIFF, as well as your mentee relies on you to meet requirements and stay committed to our program. Dependability is a valuable quality. Your promptness and consistency in meeting with youth and staff is vital.
Patience: Your need to tolerate the mentees current walk of life will be very instrumental in your success as a mentor. WE ARE NOT LOOKING TO BE THE CHANGE, BUT TO BE AVAILABLE WHEN CHANGE HAPPENS! Being able to endure and wait, while being relational with your mentee will be your greatest strength for the success of your mentee.
