Mission Statement
SOS Outreach is a youth development non-profit which utilizes adventure sports to engage high-risk students in long-term mentorship relationships. The SOS curriculum encourages responsibility, self-confidence, service, and leadership skills by instilling six core values: courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, compassion, and humility. SOS offers a year-round, long-term curriculum which combines the core values, activity days, leadership workshops, and service learning projects. SOS works with local school districts and youth agencies to identify the students who will benefit most from the structure and consistency of the curriculum. The program encourages students to set and achieve goals while increasing their ability to combat the risk factors they face.
Description
Our mentors ("Sherpas") are paired with a group of 4-6 youth for a minimum of 1 full year, and spend time with them through structured SOS activity days (skiing/snowboarding and summer activities) as well as staying in touch through phone calls and additional events. In the winter, programming includes (but is not limited to): 5 on the mountain ski/ride days with your youth (weekends), life skills workshops, two to three service learning projects, and winter graduation. During the summer, Sherpas are welcome (but not required) to join their students for M-F summer programs, and are always asked to maintain consistent contact with their students. This is a minimum 1-year commitment to your mentor group!
