Mission Statement

We Are Gender-Specific
Big Sister Boston empowers women and girls through a variety of gender-specific programs and opportunities. We are one of 11 independent agencies in Massachusetts. Of the 11 agencies, we are the ONLY agency that exclusively serves girls. Moreover, we are the largest mentoring organization in Greater Boston exclusively focused on the unique needs of women and girls.

Our Mission
We ignite girls' purpose and passion to succeed through positive mentoring relationships with women and enrichment programs that support girls' healthy development.

We have transitioned our volunteer enrollment process to be completely virtual and are making matches virtually when possible.

Our Mentoring Programs
Community-Based Mentoring (CBM) is our signature program. It is the nation's premier evidence-based, one-to-one mentoring model which matches girls (Little Sisters) between the ages of 7-15 with professionally trained and supported women mentors (Big Sisters). Community-Based Big Sisters must be 20 years of age or older. Matches meet weekly for the first three months to establish a strong friendship and can meet bi-weekly thereafter for the duration of their match relationship. The minimum commitment is 12 months for Big and Little Sisters.

School-Based Mentoring
School-Based Mentoring (SBM) is designed specifically for girls in elementary schools (grades 2-5) throughout Boston, Cambridge and Quincy. In School-Based mentoring, Big Sisters meet weekly with their Little Sister at the girl's school, generally during her lunch period (except for our after-school programs where matches meet in the late afternoon and early evening).

Our Enrichment Programs
Big Sister Boston offers broad range of programs where Little Sisters are exposed to learning experiences and opportunities. Our enrichment programs include but are not limited to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); The Arts; Health and Fitness; College and Job Readiness, camperships and scholarship opportunities and more. Our experienced staff also facilitate Life Choices and Real Choices Strong Voices programming where we bring together groups of middle school-aged girls and one-to-one matches for informative activities and events. Through a structured curriculum, our Little Sisters explore complex gender and social issues, learning how to make healthy choices today, and for the future.

Ongoing Support to Big Sisters, Little Sisters and their Families
We are just a phone call away. Our professional staff are available to answer questions and provide support to Big Sisters, Little Sisters and their families throughout their match relationship.

Big Sister mentors are diverse and come from all walks of life. The minimum age to become a Big Sister is 18 in the School-Based Program and 20 years of age in the Community-Based Program. If you're considering becoming a mentor, please give us a call. 'You don't have to be perfect. You have to be present."
