Mission Statement

We operate three traditional year-round Boys & Girls Club sites in Bakersfield and Lamont that have group or team mentoring opportunities after school Monday to Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and during the summer Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with youth ages 5 to 17 years. We provide a variety of fun and enriching activities for the Club members including homework assistance, STEM, Arts (visual and performing), Healthy Lifestyles, Environmental Education, Nutrition and Physical Fitness plus many more that are great for mentor/mentee interaction.

The Boys & Girls Club has extensive experience with implementing research-based, outcome-driven youth development programs. Our goals for our youth are:
1) Academic Success -- verified by an increase in grade-level advancement and a reduced high school dropout rate.
2) Good Character and Citizenship -- seen in increased community service and reduced juvenile crime rates.
3) Healthy Lifestyles -- an increase in healthy behaviors and a decrease in drug use and obesity rates.

Description

All interested mentors will have to attend a mentor orientation, complete and pass a screening process which includes an application, background screening, reference check, and interview prior to starting as a mentor. Screening will include discussing with the perspective mentors frankly about the expectations, benefits, and challenges of being a mentor. Each mentor will be asked to commit a minimum of 8 hours per month (twice per week for 1 hour each time) for a minimum of one year. No applicant over the age of 18 years will be allowed to begin working with youth until a background clearance has been received.
