Mission Statement

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Shoals, Inc. serves children facing adversity ages 5 to 15 in Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties. Partnering with parents, guardians, schools, corporations and others in the community, Big Brothers Big Sisters carefully pairs children with screened volunteer mentors. The organization monitors and supports these one-to-one mentoring matches throughout their course and holds itself accountable for children in the program to achieve measurable outcomes-including higher aspirations, greater confidence, better relationships and avoidance of risky behavior. Often our clients are those of single-income or low-income households or families where a parent is incarcerated or serving in the military. We match them with strong and enduring, professionally supported mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Volunteers must complete a screening process and a one year commitment is required.

Description

Mentors must live in our service delivery area of Colbert, Franklin or Lauderdale county in Alabama. They must be at least 19 years old and out of high school. Free from felony convictions. Not have experienced any major life changes within the past year and do not anticipate major life changes within the coming year. Must possess a valid driver's license and liability insurance on vehicle. Able to commit to spending between 4 and 10 hours a month with their Little. Acceptance is contingent upon completing our screening process for volunteers and suitability as a volunteer is assessed by our professional staff.
