Mission Statement
The Mission of the West Medford Community Center is to connect the diverse people of West Medford and the wider Mystic River Valley region through social, educational, cultural, health and recreational activities. For over 60 years, the West Medford Community Center has provided opportunities for individuals and families to gather, learn from each other, grow and celebrate together. Our goal is to support the idea of "community" -- that intangible quality where people know they belong and that others have their interest at heart. To accomplish this mission, we provide opportunities for people from different generations, races, ethnic backgrounds, religions, economic status, or any other arbitrary divisions to come together, learn from each other, and experience this idea of "community." While the demographics of Medford are changing, the need to feel a part of a community remains.
Description
Early in the development of the Community Center, its original incorporators (exclusively African American men) made the conscious decision, to "Adopt an all-inclusive policy which will allow us to meet all of our objectives." This meant that membership and services would not be exclusively restricted for people of color and that women would be a meaningful part of all decision making. The decision was made for the organization to continue to recruit active members from West Medford, but the work and services of the Community Center would be intended to involve and improve the lives of all who lived in the surrounding Mystic River area.
