Mission Statement

Beatitude House, sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, is committed to all disadvantaged women and children. By creating homes, providing educational opportunities and fostering healthy families, we provide them with the opportunity to transform their lives.

Description

Beatitude House is looking for mentors for the Ursuline Sisters Scholars Program. The goal of the program is to break the cycle of poverty through post-secondary education. Students taking part in the Ursuline Sisters Scholars Program come from low-income families and are in many cases a first-generation college student. The program prioritizes single parents due to their drop-out rate of 70%. Balancing school, family and work responsibilities are challenging for most students, let alone those with additional financial, childcare and/or time pressures. The program alleviates some of these burdens to increase the likelihood the student will graduate.

We are currently looking for volunteers who live in Mahoning, Trumbull, or Ashtabula counties to serve as a mentor for students in the program. Mentors are expected to provide their scholar with about one hour of support per week and interaction once per month in person. Most of this interaction will take place via email and other web-related tools (for example, instant messaging) or face-to-face, as appropriate. Mentors should work with their scholar to determine what kind of support will be most useful-specific feedback related to finding jobs, general career advice, information on higher studies, technical information, personal encouragement, and so on.

To apply to be a mentor please apply at ursulinesistersscholars.chronus.com.
