Chess Tournament Volunteer - Help manage tournament participants (typically elementary school-aged kids) and COVID-19 sanitation duty for on-site scholastic chess tournament in Cupertino Volunteers will have the vital responsibility of helping our tournaments run smoothly. Volunteers will primarily be responsible for: - acting as the face of Bay Area Chess to the public - helping set up/move/take down tables, chairs, and chess boards - supervising tournament participants in the player room - carrying out COVID-19 sanitation protocols on player stations (including chess boards/pieces before, during, and after tournament rounds) - assisting with other tournament duties as assigned (monitoring games, supervising/directing tournament players--and their parents--between rounds, ensuring no unauthorized individuals enter the tournament room, posting announcements, etc.) Volunteers will be required to undergo a short on-site training, adhere to sanitation guidelines, and follow other instructions as directed by BAC staff or the Tournament Director(s). May lead to further tournament positions in the future. A desire to help is necessary. Chess experience is not. Prefer volunteers who would like to continue working future weekend tournaments, but not necessarily. Prior chess tournament experience is helpful, but not at all necessary. Perfect for responsible, conscientious high school/college students seeking community service hours. The Juniper Hotel has free parking on-site. If you cannot locate the tournament room(s), be sure to check with the hotel staff. Please report to the Tournament Director (or other BAC staff) when you arrive. **Important: When you respond to a volunteer opportunity with us via Volunteer Match, you are NOT RESERVING a particular volunteer shift; you are letting us know you are interested in volunteering with us. You must 1) COMPLETE the Volunteer Interest/Registration Google Form online and then 2) SIGN UP for your desired shift on our Track it Forward volunteer site to reserve a volunteer shift and track your hours. (In order to sign up for a particular volunteer shift, prospective volunteers must first register on our trackitforward.com page, which sends us a request to approve you to complete your registration.) Volunteers may also be required to sign some agreements/waivers in order to volunteer. For the safety of BAC and our participants, their families, our staff, and other volunteers, volunteers over 18 may also be required to undergo FBI fingerprinting and a background check. Those under 16 may be required to provide parent/legal guardian permission to volunteer. (For a handful of opportunities in certain venues, there may be a possibility that if required by local regulations, you might also be asked to show evidence of negative tuberculosis test, COVID-19 test/vaccinations, etc. as would any other BAC staff members.) We realize this may be a lot to ask of prospective volunteers, but we take our responsibilities and commitments seriously. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
