Mission Statement

The mission of Project Second Chance, Inc. (PSC, Inc.) is to develop financial resources and promote public awareness to support Project Second Chance, Contra Costa County Library’s free and confidential adult literacy program.

Description

One in five adults in Contra Costa County lacks the literacy skills needed to independently complete tasks like reading a newspaper, applying for a job, or managing a medical condition. PSC, Inc. was founded in 1986 and was granted 501(c)3 status in 1993. PSC, Inc. develops financial resources and promote public awareness in support of Project Second Chance, Contra Costa County Library’s free and confidential adult literacy program.

Project Second Chance provides free, confidential instruction in reading, writing and spelling to English-speaking adults with literacy skills below a 6 th grade level. PSC recruits, trains and supports volunteer tutors, who work one-on-one with learners to help them achieve their individual literacy-related goals and empower them in their work and personal lives. Since Project Second Chance opened its doors in 1984, the program has helped more than 6,200 adults in Contra Costa County develop their literacy skills.

Through fundraising and advocacy work, PSC, Inc. provides invaluable support that allows Project Second Chance to fulfill its mission. PSC, Inc. seeks Board members who have an interest in supporting literacy in the Contra Costa County community through fundraising, event planning, donor management, and community advocacy work.
