The train room at the Moffett Field Historical Society Museum needs help to stay organized and to stay busy with visitors. This involves social media to increase awareness of the train room and then turn contacts into visitors, volunteers and donors. It also involves communications and coordination within our team of volunteers. Please reach out if any part of this sounds like something you want to do. This could be a significant job with a lot of variety for one person or it could be broken out into smaller assignments such as administrative separate from social media separate from website support. If you know how to do these things you can have a lot of autonomy. If you don't have the skills but are willing to commit the time, I can train you.

Help visitors have an enjoyable experience and learn about the history of Moffett Field by interpreting our exhibits and artifacts. Tour the airfield, talk to visitors about the history of hangar one, or teach visitors about the technology developed at Moffett Field. No experience or specialized knowledge is necessary to start as a docent. Training will be provided and will include shadowing other docents, reading in the museum's library and watching videos. (from our website): Exhibits are organized by significant eras of history, starting with the early 1930s. Visitors can arrange a tour with one of our dedicated docents, many of whom have literally "walked the talk" during their service to our country. Check our reviews on Google. Visitors love our docents and we'd love to have you on the team.

The museum exhibits are primarily aimed at adult interests. We have a small area where our many child visitors can take a break by coloring a picture, playing with building blocks or climbing into our Kiddie Cockpit. As we develop this area we want to introduce some STEM focussed activities. Parents are required to stay with their children so you will be an activity coordinator, not a baby sitter. If you are interested in volunteering at the museum but think learning all about Moffett Field is overwhelming, this is a great way to get started.

The museum has a small gift shop who's profits support museum operations. We need help keeping the shop neat and organized and to assist customers with their purchases. Gift shop staff also help with admission ticketing. We have an easy to use Square Register system that is easy to learn. If you are interested in volunteering at the museum but think learning all about Moffett Field is overwhelming, this is a great way to get started.

The train room contains a working HO Scale Model Railroad built by Navy Air personnel starting in 1978. It is named the Santa Clara, Gilroy and Fresno Railroad and has scenes representing the route down Highways 101, 152 and 99 from Sunnyvale to Fresno. You will operate the trains and talk to visitors about the train room and the museum. Operating the train simply involves flipping a few switches and periodically resettling trains onto the tracks. No prior experience with model trains or the museum is required. Training will be provided. The train room is open to the public only on Saturdays. This is a public contact position. Mask and social distancing rules will be in place but be aware that the train room has narrow aisles. The museum is located within Moffett Field. US Citizens and permanent residents must present a driver's license or ID card or a passport to enter the base. Non US residents must present a valid Passport. Due to insurance requirement's, docents must become museum members and must be at least 16 years old. Membership is $25/yr. Younger individuals may help out but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. We have two volunteers supporting the train room each Saturday. One person is in the train room and one is in the main part of the museum directing visitors into the train room. This is a great opportunity to volunteer as a team with your spouse, child or friend.
