This internship is most suitable for vet tech students looking for wildlife experience; recent grads from vet tech school and wildlife rehabilitators looking to augment their medical expertise. Interns will spend some time with the veterinarian but mainly train with vet assistants on animal handling, medication administration, patient care, lab techniques such as CBCs and fecals, and triage of incoming injured, sick or orphaned wildlife.

Interns will gain experience in: Outreach & Education Programs: Providing interpretative, hands-on experiences related to conservation, nature, and the environment during our Wild Talks and Tours. Utilizing informal education methods to educate a wide range of audiences including center visitors, families, scout groups, and school groups in a variety of settings including virtual, and traditional classrooms. Wildlife Hospital & Resource Center: Assist the Community Service Coordinators in the Resource Center by fielding calls from the community, admitting patients to the Wildlife Hospital, performing initial triage on injured, sick, and orphaned patients as well as upkeeping with data entry on pertinent software. Volunteer Program: Work alongside the Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator with onboarding new volunteers and organizing specific volunteer events. Wildlife Education Ambassador Program: Alongside the Outreach Specialist, learn to provide husbandry, training, and enrichment for SFWC’s Wildlife Education Ambassador Animals.

Objective: Introduce intern to the care of sick, injured and adult or juvenile wildlife and certain non-natives. Interns will: Learn the care and husbandry challenges of the animals in our care Gain hands-on wildlife experience including proper handling procedures, feeding techniques, husbandry, species-specific diets, and administration of medication Learn what’s involved in rehabilitating an animal in preparation for release such as flight conditioning, enrichment, waterproofing, etc Knowledge of the South Florida Wildlife Center (SFWC) and how the program area fits into the larger picture of animal protection Exposure to the operations of a wildlife center Knowledge of humane coexistence with wildlife Knowledge of rescues techniques when available Rehab and Release Interns will be trained on the particular aspects of their role by meeting one-on-one with staff members, and will be given access to a manual of Standard Operating Procedures, Zoonotic disease fact sheets and a species-specific diet book for reference. Daily Rehab and Release activities include: Clean and set up enclosures/habitats Prepare diets and supplemental feeding formula Hand feed animals using appropriate techniques Document all care and observations Handle patients for weighing, treatments and transfers Assist with routine care and physical exams Provide enrichment, conditioning, and maintenance of waterproofing Convey potential problems to staff both written and verbally Assist with general housekeeping/laundry Complete independent project assigned by Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator

Want to help us save local wildlife? As a South Florida Wildlife Center Volunteer, you are vital to the success of the organization’s programs in education, rehabilitation, and conservation. You will interact with an incredibly diverse range of animals and people, whether at the Center or out in the community. You will learn the fundamentals of working at a wildlife center and further develop your knowledge of a diverse range of animals and the laws we abide by to protect Florida’s resources, habitats, and inhabitants. The purpose of this volunteer program is to offer a wide variety of opportunities to interested people and to provide useful and meaningful service. This will assist Center staff in furthering the goals of The South Florida Wildlife Center, and provide support that would otherwise be impossible due to budget limitations. Not only will you be helping Florida’s wildlife, you’ll enjoy meeting new friends who share similar environmental concerns and gain personal satisfaction that comes from preserving Florida’s native animals.
