Mission Statement

Southwestern Illinois College upholds the dignity and worth of all people and believes that learning is a life-long process which enhances the quality of life. The college provides for individual growth through educational excellence and active partnerships with students and the community.

Description

Adults (17 and older who are not in school) needing free tutoring in reading, writing and/or math subjects will be assisted by tutors in Project Read. Tutors work with students in public locations, such as libraries and churches, for approximately two hours per week. Books and materials are provided at no cost to the student.

Volunteer tutors are needed throughout the Southwestern Illinois College district. Tutors receive 12 hours of training before beginning to work with a student, and additional training opportunities are provided. Tutor training is available at various times and locations during the year.

This program was made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.
