Mission Statement

Connecting trained students and professional medical interpreters with free clinics to provide language services for limited English proficiency patients.

Description

Founded in 2020, Vocalize Columbus is a nonprofit organization expanding access to free medical interpretation services for free and charitable clinics in Ohio. Studies have shown that limited English proficiency (LEP) individuals are more financially vulnerable than the average American, affecting their access to quality healthcare with the language barrier providing additional challenges. The team at Vocalize Columbus hopes to improve health outcomes and patient experience for the thousands of LEP individuals living in the greater Columbus area by connecting volunteer interpreters to serve free clinics in need. We are currently recruiting interpreters who are interested in remote medical interpretation. To ensure volunteers are prepared for patient interpretation settings, we require demonstrated language proficiency (>=ILR-2 or ACTFL-Mid) in the target language and 40-hr of medical interpretation training (e.g. The Community Interpreter). Volunteers will have the opportunity to gain volunteer/clinical hours, acquire first-hand experience in patient care, and give back to a community in need.
