Mission Statement

Our Mission and Our Vision To advance the conservation of birds in Wisconsin and throughout the Western Great Lakes Region through coordinated research, monitoring, and education. We envision a day when knowledge of birds is widespread, decisions affecting them are based on good science, and citizens care about conservation and participate in it so that common species are kept common and imperiled populations are restored.

Description

The Lake Michigan Bird Observatory is a scientific and educational nonprofit organization that aims to conserve birds and bats in Wisconsin. Currently, we have two pillar projects, the Neighborhood Habitat Improvement Project and Expansion of the Motus Wildlife Tracking System in Wisconsin.

We are recruiting volunteers for the Neighborhood Habitat Improvement Project, a program designed to engage and empower residents to improve urban habitat at the most local scale, their yard. The beneficial results of this project will include enhanced suburban habitat for birds, improved water quality, expanded scientific understanding of urbanization and resident engagement in the process of science. Working together as a community, we will begin to understand the effects of these changes on birds and wildlife.

Neighborhood Habitat Improvement Project Goals:

  • To improve habitat for birds and other wildlife in residential Port Washington as a pilot for future programs in other sub/urban areas.
  • To improve water quality of suburban streams in Port Washington.
  • To improve our scientific understanding of how urbanization affects birds.
  • To nurture and promote a community of engaged, motivated and knowledgeable citizens.

We are piloting this project in Port Washington. In the future, we want to expand this pilot program to other communities in the Southeast Wisconsin Region.
