Refugee children usually arrive in the US with limited schooling. They're rarely fluent in English and they have left everything familiar behind. Most often, parents are also non-English speaking, and themselves adjusting to our highly structured society -including our education system! Our tutors help kids gain confidence by working with them to improve English skills, and by helping kids learn how to read and follow homework instructions. This is a very flexible opportunity, and anyone who's ever helped a child do their homework can tutor! The commitment: Twice a week, for one hour between 6:00 to 7:00 pm CST. After so much disruption and uncertainty, consistency is important. Please plan to be available twice a week for at least an entire semester. We hold lessons Monday through Thursday. Our volunteer tutors provide homework support and help with English language learning. As a tutor, you will reinforce the English skills a child is learning in the classroom. In the process, tutors build awareness of the behavioral expectations in U.S. classrooms, help kids retain a positive ethnic and cultural identity, and encourage them to stay engaged, all of which are essential for their integration. You don't need any teaching experience Schedule can be modified to suit both the tutor and student Easy online volunteer orientation All meetings are online, you can join from anywhere Volunteer Background Check performed by the local ISD This program has been so successful that we have a waiting list of over 100 students. Do you have time in the evening to share with a student twice a week? Would you like to experience the joy of helping a child say: "Yes, I understand!" We invite you to share your gift of time and attention with a refugee student.

High school kids almost always need a little help with math and science. But refugee kids need even more help. Coming from a different educational backgrounds, they may not have studied the foundations of math and science. They may have not had a chance to develop knowledge and the skills they'll need to succeed in their new American classroom. But more than that, newly arrived students are trying to learn new material in a new language. Regardless of how talented or how much aptitude a student may possess, it's very challenging. We're looking for tutors who can help high schoolers with: Algebra Geometry Chemistry Biology The commitment: Twice a week, for one hour, to begin at 6 pm CST. After so much disruption and uncertainty, consistency is important. Please plan to be available twice a week for at least an entire semester. First time considering tutoring? No problem. Our volunteers are helpers like yourself who may not have any formal teaching experience. However, if you've ever helped a child with their homework, then you can tutor! Learn how! Before your'e paired, you'll shadow an experience volunteer tutor until you're ready to begin with your first student. The hours that you spend working with a young student could make the difference between completing high school or dropping out! Your gift of time and teaching will build a young person's confidence and ability to understand assignments, plus give them another valuable opportunity to expand their English language skills. If you have time one or two evenings a week to tutor high school or middle school math or science, we'd like to pair you with a student from Afghanistan or Ukraine who needs your help and understanding. AmeriCorps members looking for MLK day volunteer opportunities are welcome to inquire.
