Mission Statement

Our Mission is to help the children in single mom families thrive; first in West Michigan and then throughout MI. HSM is taking single mom families out of high-risk poverty situations and giving them the tools they need to achieve, and maintain, economic independence. The main way we do that is by helping single parents become full-time students finish college or get a trade certification. Each family sets goals and receives a customized plan on how to achieve their goals. It is holistic, providing academics and life skills and family time during the education process and transition into the workforce. We invite people in the community to walk alongside a single mom to decrease the loneliness and isolation she feels, to give her hope and encourage her as a student parent on her journey to becoming financially stable and having children who thrive.

Description

Nearly half of single moms work minimum-wage jobs and are unable to pay all the bills. Hope for Single Moms uses a "teach-a-woman-to-fish" approach. With a better paying job, single moms can provide well for their children. With better food, children will grow better physically and do well academically. Hope for Single Moms is 100% donor-funded and volunteer-staffed. That means single moms NEED YOU to invest your time and resources to help them go back to school. By doing so you fight poverty and childhood hunger in single mom families. You not only change the world for two generations, but society for countless generations to come.

Our FREE career consultation not only gives single moms a career path and goal, but we assess whether she is ready to be successful at school, parenting and homework. We offer a network of support. Mentors and life assistance teams, academic tutors, babysitting and so much more. There are four pillars to our program. EDUCATION - A career education--college or trade. MENTORING - Academic (see our free career consultation), emotional, financial and spiritual. COMMUNITY - a single mom support group, community with other student parents, special events just for the moms, and family events. LIFE ASSISTANCE - This team serves as her second "family" and helps with the challenges life brings her way.
