Moose’s Meals is a pet pantry that supports residents of Visalia, California in caring for their animals by providing free pet food to those in need. Our organization was founded in response to a severe lack of resources available to low income, elderly, and homeless individuals in relation to pet care- an issue further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. CalFresh does not cover pet food, however, and local food pantries do not accept pet food donations, thereby leaving disadvantaged pet owners in a grim situation. This is the heart of our organization: removing the barriers that force individuals to surrender their companions. For those in desperate need, pet pantries can make all the difference in this decision. Moose’s Meals was founded in March 2020 and, as of December 2020, has provided 17,000 pounds of pet food to individuals and families in need. At our most recent event, hosted on December 5, 2020, we managed to distribute roughly 2,500 pounds of food.
We are planning to introduce a spay and neuter sponsorship program in Summer 2021, where we will sponsor the cost of spaying/neutering for pets who use our pantry. Out of the over 150 applications we have received from people who use our pantry, a large majority requested information about low cost spaying and neutering.
In the 10 months since our formation we have been featured on ABC30, and in three local newspapers (Hanford Sentinel, Valley Voice and Sun Gazette) as well as in one magazine (Enjoy San Joaquin Valley Living). We have also been able to place donation barrels in two Tractor Supply stores and one locally owned and operated feed store. We would like to get more regular income such as monthly giving and/or corporate/business sponsorships, especially with large but locally owned businesses.
