The Santa Cruz Public Libraries ("SCPL") is accepting applications for volunteers to fill vacant positions. This is an unpaid position that does not lead to permanent employment. SCPL delivers information, education, enrichment and inspiration through a network of neighborhood library branches, a web-based digital library, a Bookmobile and community-based programs. SCPL serves children, teens and adults with innovative programming, professional services and community facilities that spark imagination and support discovery. Overview of Opportunity: The Advisory Council of Teens ("ACT") provides advice and support to staff in planning and implementing teen services and programming at the Santa Cruz Public Libraries. Under general supervision of teen services librarians, volunteers assist with programming at the library, including the annual Summer Reading Program, college readiness programs, and CHP Start Smart Teen Program. Recently, ACT members have worked on animation workshops, finance classes, and the Japanese Cultural Fair. ACT members participate in special events during the summers and weekends in the school year. ACT groups meet once a month at three locations: Capitola Branch Library: 2:00-4:00pm First Sunday of the month Felton Branch Library: 2:00-4:00pm Third Saturday of the month Downtown Branch Library:2:00-4:00pm Third Sunday of the month Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Other ACT meetings at other SCPL locations may become available in the future. Expectations of ACT Members Be ages 12 to 18 living in Santa Cruz County Attend monthly meetings and events with permission from parent or guardian Can be transported occasionally to offsite locations in Santa Cruz County by parent or guardian Communicate effectively with peers and patrons while working with others to achieve goals Benefits of Joining ACT Gain experience working with Library staff, public, and peers Influence youth programs and services within SCPL Meet other teens in Santa Cruz County Develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills while earning volunteer hours Typical Duties Attend and participate in monthly meetings to provide feedback on youth programming and services within the Santa Cruz Public Libraries Brainstorm creative ways to promote library services to young adults in Santa Cruz County. Assist with events, occasionally at offsite locations in Santa Cruz County, by staffing outreach booths, helping people find places to sit, explaining the Summer Reading Program, and counting the number of attendees. The Senior Computer Center is a program run through Friends of Parks and Recreation. Volunteers will help our Spanish-speaking & English-speaking seniors navigate and troubleshoot their tech! Volunteers will help Seniors troubleshoot their various technology devices given their particular expertise in the field. Skills Needed: Ability to listen and teach seniors how to navigate their own tech devices (computers, smartphones and tablets). They'll be helping our seniors stay connected to their community! Santa Cruz Symphony volunteer ushers are needed for the upcoming concerts on September 21st, November 2nd and December 14th Volunteers assist with ticket scanning and showing people to their seats. Most positions require standing and walking upstairs. Each volunteer receives a ticket and seat for the concert! Please make sure to bring a bottle of water and a snack to keep you going through the night. Where- Civic Auditorium 307 Church Street, Santa Cruz 95060 Dress Code- Volunteers must wear a white or black shirt and dark/black pants. Clothing with holes and sneakers are strongly discouraged. We recommend volunteer ushers be vaccinated for COVID19. Steps for New Volunteers: Step 1: Fill out a CityServe Online Application *Pleaes note -you do not need to include a resume when you submit your application. Step 2: Select the date you want to usher for and use the sign up button below to join the group. Once your forms are submitted, the CitySERVE Coordinator will confirm your shift. Join CityServe and the City of Santa Cruz to help clean up our most popular beaches! Lead you own Beach Clean-up with your family, coworkers, or friends. Supplies such as buckets, bags, and trash grabbers are available upon request. CitySERVE will provide you with training before your event. We encourage you to schedule your clean-up after busy holiday weekends, and large events! You can download the Application for a group project here: Beach Clean-up Request Form We typically forms be submitted 21 business days before your desired project date. Dates and times are very flexible for groups that can lead their own project (with training on requirements).
