Mission Statement

The Cancer Neuroscience Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin seeks to improve the lives of patients with cancer by studying how cancer and its treatments affects brain health including cognition, sleep, mood and stress.

Description

Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment, also known as chemo-brain or chemo-fog, describes a collection of symptoms that many patients experience during and following chemotherapy treatments. Symptoms include difficulty concentrating, forgetting details of recent events, confusing dates and appointments, losing items, having trouble thinking of words, and generally feeling mentally "slower" than usual. Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment affects an estimated 60% of patients with cancer. Research groups, including our lab, are working hard to better understand changes in brain structure and function related to administration of life-saving chemotherapy drugs.
