Mission Statement

To identify and promote both emerging and accomplished writers and investigative journalists through our program of Mexico-based master classes, as well as through free public events in Mexico and our alumni communities across the US and in other countries. For 2021, we've posted this on our website: In spring 2021 Under the Volcano will convene online, continuing to offer the intimate master classes and far-ranging conversations for which we’re known, but expanding from one week to three and adding layers we could only dream of before. Think of it as a cyber residency, with time to write, interact with accomplished peers from around the world and take part in a host of exciting side events, all from the comfort of home. In other words, a space to dream, speculate and create new work.

Description

Under the Volcano is an international, biilingual program of writing master classes and public events that has convened every January since 2003 in Tepoztlán, Mexico, an hour outside Mexico City in the foothills of the great volcanoes. Our award-winning faculty spans the English-speaking and Hispanic worlds.

The program is an incubator of literary talent and a catalyst for poets, fiction writers, writers of literary non-fiction and investigative journalists with works in progress. Based in Tepoztlán, Mexico and incorporated as a not-for profit (501c3) in the State of New York, our reach is global as we promote international understanding and all forms of diversity across cultures, languages, generations and communities.

Our master classes are open to poets, novelists, short story writers, investigative journalists, memoirists and essayists, as well as those working on projects that challenge traditional genre forms. Both accomplished and emerging writers are strongly encouraged to apply. We offer a number of full fellowships based on merit and subsidize roughly half of our participants with partial financial aid.
