Hospice Volunteers provide a valuable service and you are considered a member of the hospice team. Volunteers provide services and support to individuals with terminal illness and their families The primary goal of a hospice volunteer is to provide empathy and companionship to both the patient and their loved ones during this challenging time. Volunteers’ duties vary depending on the needs of the person they are caring for. At times, you will sit and visit with patients and provide companionship and support. Other times, you may play cards or checkers or read aloud from newspaper or share a good book together. If visiting is not a strength of yours, we also need folks to grocery shop, do lawn and garden work or cook a warm meal. As a companion, you, in essence, provide a comforting presence, and an opportunity to share memories at a time where people are most vulnerable and could benefit greatly from your presence. If you have a strong aptitude for compassion and empathy and are personable, friendly, and open to new perspectives, please reach out via email and we will be in touch soon to share the many ways you can volunteer with Park Nicollet Methodist Hospice.

Here at Park Nicollet Methodist Home Hospice, we are looking for volunteers who can provide l ight housekeeping for some of our patients/families. As patients decline and deal with mounting fatigue, they are no longer able to keep up with household tasks. Some are looking for help with laundry and making beds, others would like help with dusting and vacuuming etc. For these folks, it is important to them to remain in their homes and offering a little help around the house allows for them to remain home and not use their remaining energy on keeping up the house. If you find cleaning to be satisfying and enjoy helping others, please contact us.

Our patients are terminally ill and living in facilities or their own homes. They may require respite so a caregiver can get out and get a break, visits, errands, light housekeeping, whatever is helpful as they care for their loved one. Or if they are in a facility, visiting for socialization and to help with isolation. We serve a 30 mile radius outside of Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, going into the western, northwestern and southwestern suburbs. Due to COVID, we require our volunteers to be vaccinated for COVID.

We participate in We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Veteran volunteers play an important role serving our hospice patients who served our country. Given their unique experiences, sacrifices and training, there is a special bond among veterans. They share a common culture and language. Veteran volunteers are a critical part of showing gratitude for our nation’s heroes and bringing closure to them near the end of their lives. If you would like to learn more about some of these many unique opportunities, please reach out through email and we will be in touch soon. Our volunteers are part of our team and have always been an essential service that is greatly appreciated by not only patients and families, but our team. Due to COVID, we require all volunteers to be vaccinated for COVID and to wear a mask and eye protection when with patients/families.
