To increase public awareness of the library as an essential part of the community’s educational and cultural facilities. To support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities.

Description

FRIENDS OF THE ALAMEDA FREE LIBRARY is a non-profit organization supporting the city of Alameda's libraries through fundraising, volunteerism and advocacy. The Friends hosts Docent Lectures, Live@ the Library Jazz concerts and Dewey's Cafe. Proceeds support the programs and services of the Alameda Free Library.

Founded in 1974, Friends of the Alameda Free Library helps support the library and its programs through volunteer activities and fundraising.

Milestones in the group’s history:

  • The opening of a new Main Library in 2006, something the Friends worked toward for many years
  • Merger with the Alameda Free Library Foundation in 2016; the Foundation was created in 1998 to raise money for long-term support of Alameda’s libraries

The Friends is a non-profit organization with a volunteer board.

Due to the pandemic many of FAL's programming has gone online.
We currently have Online Booksales (And Delivery), Docent and Author Talks.
