Mission Statement

Empower Voters. Defend Democracy. The League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) envisions a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge, and the confidence to participate. We are non-partisan political organization with two arms. Our 501-c-4 serves our advocacy goals in creating a more equitable future in California. Our 501-c-3 is our education arm and focuses on voter and community education to increase civic engagement and participation in our democracy. A little emphasis - we are non partisan AND political. After study, we take positions on issues that align with the direction our members have set. That means we also take positions and lobby for bills, ballot measures, and participate in other policy work that aligns with our positions. We do not endorse candidates or political parties

Description

Our goals center around building a more equitable California, empowering voters, and defending our democracy by making systemic change through policy advancement, and engaging the public in civic and government participation. In the 2019/2020 election cycle, you can only imagine how critical this work has become. Defending democracy is part of our mission and we are fighting assaults on it from all sides. We are still working hard - but here are some successes we have chalked up this year:

- 60% of the 70+ bills that we took positions on in the state legislature resulted in the outcome we were seeking in the 2020 session.

- We successfully received grant funding to run a youth digital community organizing get-out-the-vote campaign targeted at 18-24 year olds in California. The campaign leverages Snapchat and TikTok to deliver critical voting messages to our audience via trusted messengers on the platforms and support peer-to-peer organizing.

- Participated (since March 2020) in 6 lawsuits covering protecting voting access in CA during the pandemic, protecting CA's redistricting process, and ensuring that undocumented persons are counted in the Census for apportionment. Our side prevailed in every suit.

- Joined a coalition of non-profits in launching ElectJustice CA, a non-partisan voter education initiative designed to help channel the energy of protests from the streets to the ballot.
