Mission Statement

The Mission of Salem Hospice Care is to provide physical. emotional, social and spiritual support to terminally ill patients, as their families and loved ones, while assisting patients and families to live with dignity and comfort as they cope with end of life issues. We believe: Hospice affirms life. Hospice recognizes dying as a process and so our care provides comfort rather than cure. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death Hospice provides physical, emotional and spiritual care to terminal ill persons and their families.

Description

The Hospice volunteers have been a vital part of the hospice concept since the very beginning of the program. In most hospices today, volunteers time makes up about 5-10 percent of the total hours spent by the team in providing patient care. The volunteer's is considered the most valuable in terms of all-around benefits to the patient and families. You as a volunteer, will have the opportunity to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support. (Within your scope of practice, of course). As a hospice volunteer, it is essential that you be a caring, emotionally mature, committed person who is comfortable talking about death, dying and providing compassion. If that is the kind of person you are, you will probably find that you gain a sense of satisfaction from making a difference in people's lives and glean valuable insights from relationships with patients and their families.
