Every Thursday and Sunday, Porchlight Community Services's volunteers help set up a grocery-style food pantry with over 3,000 pounds of rescued food; so that later in the day the families they serve get to choose and "shop" for the food they take home. Porchlight relies on its great community of volunteers to provide a dignified experience for those seeking access to nutritious food. As a "Choice pantry," their events provide a healing space, giving their clients a dignified place to choose their food products. Volunteers help with unloading, sorting, organizing food items on tables, shelves, refrigerators, and freezers, cleaning, sanitizing, and making it comforting and appealing for those that will be coming to "choose" their food. Sign up to see how you can play a critical role in helping families have access to food while working toward achieving long-term financial stability. Project Requirements & Important Notes Attire: Closed-toe shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Safety: Wearing a face mask is recommended. Please do not attend this project if you have been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 within the last 2 weeks. Porchlight's clients are immunocompromised and they're doing everything they can to keep them safe. Physical Requirements: Bending, lifting, carry up to 20lbs. Restroom access is only available via stairs. Note: Signing up as a team has been disabled for this project. Last minute team cancellations for a shift this small have been extremely detrimental to Porchlight being able to distribute food to families in need so only individual sign up is allowed and groups cannot be accommodated during this shift. Volunteers must be fully signed up through HandsOn San Diego to attend. Please give AT LEAST 12 hours notice if you cannot attend. You must download the HandsOn Connect app to your smart device to electronically sign the waiver and check in at this volunteer opportunity. The HandsOn Connect App can be downloaded from the Apple Store and Google Play.
