Mission Statement

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Greater Indianapolis is dedicated to improving the lives of persons and families affected by mental illness through education, support and advocacy.

Description

NAMI Greater Indianapolis has always been a grass-roots movement that has been led by people with lived experiences. Started as NAMI Indianapolis and began by providing education to family members that were lost in how to help their loved ones, into a movement covering the entire Greater Indianapolis area, that not only helps families but empowers individuals with a lived experience of having a mental health condition, to develop confidence, strengthen relationships, enhance their communication skills and set goals for the future.

For support and education, NAMI Greater Indianapolis offers virtual support groups for families and for peers and in person groups all over the Greater Indianapolis area, when in person groups are allowed. We offer many classes virtually, and in person when allowed, to provide opportunities for families and peers to learn more about mental illness, recovery and how to prepare for a potential crisis situation. In listening to the needs of the various communities NAMI Greater Indianapolis serves, an expansion was developed to bring NAMI Basics education to the caregivers of youth with mental health conditions and to bring NAMI Family & Friends presentations and Youth & Caregiver workshops to the underserved and underappreciated communities in Marion County. We are also implementing Provider Support for those on the front lines of the COVID-19 epidemic by partnering with local hospital systems.
