Description

AARP Foundation Experience Corps Hosted by Carver Community Organization gives adults 50 and older a unique opportunity to guide the next generation of children in Evansville. Participants give back to our community and impart valuable experience on young minds. Our program accepts volunteers interested in helping children become better readers by providing support using our structured model designed to improve reading skills in children from kindergarten to third grade. This program connects individuals over age 50 with students in local schools to provide tutoring and mentoring support. Volunteers assist 2 -3 days per week for up to three hours a day and are trained to follow our structured model that impacts the student served. Our goals are to improve children's literacy, strengthen our community, help instill inspiration in our schools, and support hard working teachers. We are looking for people who are at least 50 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and agree to a criminal background check. Volunteers must pass a basic reading and writing screening and commit to at least 25 hours of pre-service training and be willing to learn expand their knowledge.
