Mission Statement

AthensWest Theatre Company is committed to developing an intimate and dynamic relationship with Central Kentucky by producing compelling professional theatre.

Description

AthensWest Theatre Company was formed in 2014 by Bo List, Kate Goodwin, Mark Mozingo, and Jeff Day - and produced its first play, John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize-winning DOUBT in February of 2015. Since then, AthensWest has produced a three-show season every year, as follows:

2015-2016: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, 33 VARIATIONS, GOLDEN BOY OF THE BLUE RIDGE

2016-2017: SUPERIOR DONUTS, FAILURE: A LOVE STORY, IN THE NEXT ROOM, OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY

2017-2018: OUR TOWN, EQUIVOCATION, THE CHRISTIANS

2018-2019: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, THE CAKE

Additionally, AthensWest produces a number of one-off theatrical evenings, including its "Dark Nights Variety Hour," and annual January Ball.

AthensWest is the first theatre in Lexington history to offer "Equity points" - which allows an actor to accumulate enough credits to join Actors Equity Association - the union for actors and stage managers. Our contract with Equity currently allows us to employ two union actors per production, working alongside local, non-union professionals. This is an important stepping stone for many young and emerging actors, as well as a tool to hire the best possible available talent.

AthensWest takes its name from Lexington's 18th Century nickname: "the Athens of the West," so-called because of its impressive culture, education, and arts. AthensWest hopes to celebrate the best of Central Kentucky tradition while pointing the way forward with new ideas and innovation.
