Mission Statement

The West Central Park Project is committed to maintaining a walkable neighborhood and a resilient, connected community. We believe that having a beautiful space for the neighborhood to enjoy will enhance both the community and the economy surrounding it.

Description

Purchased in 2013 as as a result of community resistance to this derelict corner commercial lot being developed as yet another gas station and strip mall, West Central Park Project was formed as a 501c3 nonprofit with the goal of creating a green, inviting, multi-use neighborhood common space that would promote resilience and community connection. A dedicated group of volunteers has helped the park grow into a green hub that inspires walking in the neighborhood, shared bounty from edible fruit trees and raised vegetable beds, free summer concerts and movies, and a sunny open "plaza" for picnic lunches and chess games.

Now we are moving into an exciting new phase, with most of the foundational planting and infrastructure complete. We have lots of ideas for using this wonderful space in different ways, including hosting a Farm Stand for small local farmers with CSA offerings or possibly direct sales, an expanded schedule of concerts and open mic events, workshops, and more. We need volunteers who enjoy gardening, but also are looking for folks to be on our Stage Crew for concerts, help with outreach and communications via social media and other channels, and take on special projects that will allow us to connect more of our neighbors to this unique resource in the heart of the community.
