Mission Statement

We are a student run College of the Sequoias’ Club that is dedicated to promoting diversity, aiding the community, and making ever-lasting friendships. This club aims to be a part of the community of Visalia, while communicating and showcasing students to be a part of a larger picture. BSTARS organizes field trips, hosts social gatherings, attend conferences, provide scholarships, and volunteer in various fundraisers/charities.

Description

BSTARS (Black Students Taking Action Reaching Success) was founded in 1989 by Wanda Katepa and Darlean McClure; it's purpose was to serve as a support system for African American students in COS campuses to discuss various social issues, go onto educational excursions and receive academic tutoring/scholarships. Since then, the club has diversified over the years.

BSTARS has volunteered with organizations such as Food Link, Bethlehem Center, Happy Trials, SALT + Light, and FAATCO (Filipino American Association of Tulare County).

In 2016, it was awarded By the Edison Electric Company for its active volunteering status in the Central Valley. Within the Visalia Campus, BSTARS was awarded 1st place in the local canned food drive. BSTARS was honored to be recognized as the most active club on COS campus from 2016 to present.
