Laurel currently serves a diverse student populations of over 500 of Oakland's best and brightest. In our work we emphasize the importance of building close, caring relationship with our students in an environment that is safe and supportive. Our goal is to help each and every one of them to thrive and reach their fullest potential.
We do this work in partnership with our students' parents and caregivers and with the support of the larger Laurel community.
The school is under the direction of John Stangl, who has worked in the Oakland Unified School District since 1991 as a teacher, instructional coach and administrator. As the site leader, Mr. Stangl seeks to transform Laurel into a full-service community school in partnership with all stakeholders and community members.
Mr. Stangl, along with classroom teachers, counselors, instructional assistants, community members, and volunteering parents, comprise a committed and highly motivated team dedicated to our vision, mission and goals. Laurel teachers use standards based instruction to prepare our kids for their future place in society. Laurel offers many different programs that address the learning needs of the whole child. Activities include: Performing Arts, Computers, Physical Education, Library, and Instrumental Music.
