Mission Statement

The mission of Civil Justice, Inc. is to provide legal help to Marylanders through a statewide network of lawyers who share a commitment to increasing access to justice.

Description

Civil Justice (CJ) was founded in 1998 in order to fill gaps in areas where legal services organizations, due to insufficient resources, cannot provide representation. CJ bridges the access to justice gap through a combination of in-house litigation and a statewide network of attorneys. Our projects include:
The Economic Justice Program (EJP) provides representation to Marylanders exploited by illegal lending and debt collection practices. The EJP has saved Maryland consumers $1,026,996 in avoided court judgments and has resulted in $1,134,656 in affirmative recoveries.

CJ’s 60+ Legal Program provides seniors statewide with legal help to establish simple wills, power of attorneys, and advance health care directives. CJ’s program serves Marylanders who are not income-eligible for free services.

CJ's Foreclosure Legal Assistance Program provides critical legal services to Maryland homeowners facing foreclosure. Through our free foreclosure advice hotline and our low-bono mediation services, CJ assists Marylanders who do not qualify for free legal services.
CJ partners with TheSouthwest Partnership, a coalition of 7 Baltimore City neighborhood associations and 6 anchor institutions in Southwest Baltimore. Through this program, CJ collaborates on legal and policy strategies that lead to cohesive and vibrant neighborhoods.
