Mission Statement

The Spencertown Academy Arts Center, entrusted with a unique historic landmark, is dedicated to preserving and maintaining the Academy building, to providing a welcoming community space, and to presenting programs in the arts and humanities for Columbia County and its neighbors.

Description

We are an arts organization housed in an historic (1847) Greek Revival style former school building in Spencertown, (Columbia County), NY. We have the building from the town since our incorporation, in 1972, with a promise to preserve and maintain this landmark structure. We have 2 small art galleries, with half a dozen shows each year, and members of the Academy get their own show once every other year. In our performance space on the second floor, we present discussions, classes, and music of all types, around a dozen performances a year. And a group called Creative Columbia, a consortium of artists of all genres meets freeform-style monthly to discuss their work, issues, and to present new ideas and works. We are also linked to the Chatham school system with a program titled "ArtsVoyage". All of this can be better seen on out website: spencertownacademy.org. We are looking to expand our Board. Our budget is very small ($160K), and we are basically a volunteer-based group, having only one part-time employee. We need people who are able to chair committees, lead ad hoc groups, show up and help out at a lot of events, and raise funds and develop membership.
