Mission Statement

The mission of Christ House is to provide comprehensive and compassionate health care to sick, homeless persons in the District of Columbia, and to assist them in addressing critical issues to help break the cycle of homelessness.

Description

Christ House opened in December 1985, the first residential medical facility for homeless patients in the United States, and has been open every day since. Christ House delivers a broad array of services and activities to support patients in achieving a complete recovery. The core activity is the Medical Services Program in which single, homeless men with an acute medical need receive in-house, 24-hour nursing care provided by a team of staff physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, nursing aides, and other support staff.

Each patient who comes to our doors receives excellent medical care in a home with an environment of hospitality, care, dignity and respect. After enduring years of social isolation while living on the streets, this is the first time many of them have experienced this level of care and community. Our care and environment exposes patients to the possibility of making positive life changes and improving their living situations. When medically ready to leave, we make every effort to place patients in more stable housing than before they came to Christ House. This may be permanent or transitional housing, a nursing home, or an inpatient program for further treatment of substance abuse.
