Mission Statement

Cathedral Kitchen's mission is to help people out of food insecurity and champion their pursuit of stability and prosperity.

Description

Cathedral Kitchen has a vision of success, hope, and abundance for people in need in Camden. This vision drives all of our programming and calls us to do more during this unprecedented time. In pursuit of that vision, we are supporting the immediate needs of vulnerable residents in the short-term, while breaking down barriers to supports and opportunities that will lead them to long-term stability and self-sufficiency. Annually, our Meal Program feeds 3,000 Camden residents who are living in scarcity - many are unemployed or underemployed, homeless or tenuously housed, and lack access to basic needs and stabilizing supports. While addressing their food insecurity, our Support Services provide personal care items as well as access to social services, benefits, and housing through service partners. Connecting guests to these services helps them reach a more stabilized status from which they can achieve higher-level goals, like education and employment. Our Culinary and Baking Arts Training program further supports our mission by readying economically marginalized individuals for sustained employment.

I volunteered and attended training to learn how to conduct interviews for this organizations clients. I was scheduled for two event. I showed up dressed to work in an office but learned they over scheduled and I was needed to escort clients selected for interviews. I mentioned I'd prefer to stay with the interviews & received a semi-scowl by the young woman in charge. Wanting to be a team player I ended up standing (in heels and dress clothes) for 2 hours escorting those chosen for interviews back & forth. Standing next to the center mgr (picking clients for the survey's) I mentioned I was terribly unprepared for this job, and she told me to just wear sneakers and old clothes in the future. Unfortunately, I don't own sneakers and like to wear nice clothes so this definitely isn't the right "gig" for me again. I was disappointed though that they didn't realize that volunteers should be used for the positions that fit their skills & preferences and not just to fill in any position
