Founded in 1980, Grassroots Leadership is a nationally recognized civil and human rights organization based in Austin, Texas, working for a more just society where prison profiteering, mass incarceration, deportation, and criminalization are things of the past. As a national
organization with a base in Texas, we work to transform the criminal justice and immigration systems through organizing, research, advocacy and public education; by building bridges between communities to increase the capacity of local leaders and coalitions; and by mobilizing those most impacted by incarceration and deportation.
Our efforts are largely led by individuals negatively impacted by criminalization, particularly people of color and immigrant community members. Through leadership trainings and advocacy campaigns led by formerly incarcerated community members, their families, and allies, we shift public perception, advance best practices, and offer alternatives to profiting off the imprisonment of communities of color and the criminalization of immigration and mental health-related issues.
