Mission Statement
Camp Spring Creek empowers children with dyslexia to become confident, inspired achievers.
Description
Camp Spring Creek was founded in 2003 outside of Bakersville, North Carolina as a residential summer camp for students with dyslexia. Founders Susie and Steve van der Vorst were veterans of the two existing residential summer camps for children with dyslexia and Susie, a Fellow in the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, was a teacher at Carolina Day School and instrumental in the set up of the Key School.
In addition to operating the summer camp, through the years, Susie began to offer her expertise to teachers in Western North Carolina through training courses. As a result of this training and quality instructional time, our 1st and 2nd grade students have made one to two year gains in their reading levels over eight months.
In addition to this training, Susie has also trained teachers in Mitchell County, resulting in higher reading scores for students in their classrooms throughout the school year.
