Description
Formed in 2016 to serve as a steward of conscious healthcare, Austin Health Commons is a non-profit organization working to build a new way for our community to achieve health. Austin Health Commons is working to empower communities to shift the ownership of health care from corporations back to the community and to cultivate root-cause community healing.
Root-cause community healing means to find the root of a societal problem and address it. We believe the root-cause of many social ills is racism and the structural inequities that stem from our country’s difficult history of slavery and genocide of native peoples. Community healing from this traumatic past begins with envisioning a healthy, healed Austin without the structural barrier of racism. Similar to treating the root-cause of an illness in our bodies instead of the individual symptoms, to create a society free of racism we must have a vision and an understanding of what a healthy, healed society looks like and how it functions.
