Position: Food Shelf Communications Volunteer Steward: Katie Bull, Director of Programs Your Purpose and Impact: Many Minnesota food shelves are volunteer run and don't have additional capacity to share about their programs and services. That's where you come in! This volunteer position ensures food shelves are equipped to effectively and consistently tell their story for a myriad of uses and communicate with community members and funders. When matched to a food shelf you will be responsible for: ● Distilling organizational information to guide in funding prospect research and development of a Food Shelf Communications Template ● Reviewing Food Shelf Communications Template with the food shelf contact and/or FFEN Project Manager ● Creating and proposing a grant calendar ● Drafting language for specific grants as requested by the food shelf ● Supporting grant reports at conclusion of granting period, as needed Skills you’ll need to be successful: ● Strong written communication skills ● Experience working in different communications strategies/platforms (social media, website, promotional materials) ● Experience writing grants is preferred, but not necessary ● Ability to work quickly and take initiative to meet project goal ● Curiosity and the ability to glean information from multiple sources Your opportunity for growth: ● Directly support a food shelf in building organizational sustainability ● Develop your ability to craft concise content to convey organizational program work and broader impact ● Gain experience in grant prospecting and writing ● Broaden your knowledge of the hunger relief sector Time Commitment and Logistics: ● Total Time Requirement: 4-6 hours per engagement. Position: 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf Survey Volunteer You can play a critical role in helping to inform food shelf improvements and impact programming across the hunger relief sector in Minnesota by collecting meaningful responses from food shelf shoppers (clients) and ensuring a welcoming and confidential environment as they participate in the 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf Survey. Why the Minnesota Food Shelf Survey is critical for the hunger relief sector: Center hunger relief work on the voices of people experiencing food insecurity Standardize feedback loops to inform and improve food shelf services Gather data to inform system improvements and investments Role Responsibilities: Data Collection at Food Shelves (100%) Articulate the purpose and goals of the 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf survey to multiple audiences: Food Shelf leaders, volunteers and shoppers Ensure appropriate materials are displayed and available for shifts at food shelves Serve as a liaison to food shelf leaders (staff & volunteers) during each data collection shift so that messaging is consistent and shoppers are respectfully and confidentially invited to participate in the survey Work with food shelf staff to determine the most appropriate process for administering the survey based on food shelf space, food distribution process and in alignment with survey sampling guidelines Serve as direct point of contact with shoppers to consistently invite them to participate in the 2022 Minnesota Food Shelf Survey Ability to travel to across the state of MN to administer surveys shifts at food shelves Participate in Data collection volunteer training (1.5 hours via zoom) Keys to Success in this Position: Experience interacting positively with diverse populations Comfortable approaching shoppers and asking them to complete the survey Drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle Able to attend volunteer training (1.5 hour training via zoom) Nice to Have: Previous experience surveying or interviewing people Previous data collection experience Bilingual (language needs: Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Russian) Time Commitment: Total time requirement: 15 hour goal over 8-10 weeks, (2-3 hour shifts) Business hours (8 am - 4 pm) primarily, some evenings required Project dates: July - mid August Work site: Across the state of Minnesota Reports to: FFEN Community Engagement Coordinator Benefits: Participate in a diverse, cross-sector group of individuals committed to improving access and experiences in food shelf spaces and across the hunger relief system. Play a role in gathering data that will be used to guide hunger relief sector priorities for the coming 2-3 years. Mileage reimbursement Implementing organizations for the 2022 Statewide Survey are University of MN Extension and Foundation for Essential Needs (FFEN), with funding provided by MN DHS, SNAP-Ed, and Hunger Solutions MN. The 2022 Survey is the continued evolution of the important work first started in 2017 and 2019 by SuperShelf . All 2022 Statewide Survey Interns and Volunteers will be supervised by FFEN. Your Purpose and Impact: Most Minnesota food shelves are volunteer run and don't have additional capacity to think through the best design and flow of their food shelf. That's where you come in! You will work alongside food shelf leadership to build more capacity in their space or process to better serve their shoppers. Many times, this looks like a food shelf space redesign! There are many reasons a food shelf will want to redesign their space; wanting to create a more welcoming environment for food shelf users, needing to allow for more families to be in their space at once, or switching their distribution model! When matched to a food shelf you will be responsible for: Review Current Layout: Volunteers can visit food shelf locations during service hours to see the current design in action. Meet with the food shelf contact to hear about current challenges in the space, and their hopes for the new layout. Recommend New Layout Options: Create and document new option(s) for the food shelf contact to review in collaboration with FFEN staff and volunteers. Client Centered Approach: Collaborate with food shelf leadership and identify other recommendations in relation to client needs. What you will need to find success in this volunteer role: Experience in space planning, layout design, architecture, or interior design Ability to document new layout option(s) through online tools, software, or sketches Access to a computer for consistent communication and documentation Being organized and task-driven Your opportunity for growth includes: Participating in a unique organization supporting the work and sustainability of MN food shelves. Your Purpose and Impact: With our limited staff focusing our time on partnering with food shelves and reshaping the hunger relief system we do not have the capacity to tell the stories of our work. That's where you come in! We need a skilled writer to help develop effective storytelling techniques that share the stories of FFEN, local food shelves and the changing hunger relief system. To lead development of both web and social media content that evolves how the broader public understands what a food shelf can look like and the critical stabilizer role it plays in a community. Your Opportunities for Growth: Gain experience and refine your ability to communicate effectively with unique audiences (donors, volunteers, food shelves and peer organizations) while ensuring broader alignment with organizational brand and tone Develop your ability to craft concise blogs and blurbs that convey meaning for different communications avenues Enhance storytelling tone that honors the important work being done in the field by local food shelves During this Internship you will have responsibility for: Story Development: Attend or watch the recording of the project impact meetings we have with our food shelf partners, ask questions of staff, volunteers and food shelves to capture an engaging story. Blog Post Creation: Create 2-3 engaging blog posts around our project impact reports per month Social Media Promotion: Brainstorm and create social media blurbs to promote the FFEN blog in a way that shares stories and increases engagement.
