Bring your specialized, deep experience to help small business entrepreneurs achieve success. Today’s small business owners must master many functions to drive greater success and accelerate growth - from building world-class websites to leveraging the power of social media and implementing cloud computing. As part of SCORE’s free mentoring services, you can work directly with an experienced SCORE mentor and their entrepreneur clients to support very specialized areas of small business. As a Subject Matter Expert Mentors (SME), you would be an adjunct expert called in to provide specialized support and advice to assist a SCORE mentor when their client needs a deeper dive on a specific topic. Areas where specialized SME services are needed include (but are not limited to): finance, accounting, human resources management, website design, development, and webmaster skills; social media and digital marketing skills; taxation and specialized finance skills; IT infrastructure and cloud computing understanding and advice. SCORE Central Coast is a chapter of a national nonprofit serving small businesses in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Our clients represent a diverse community with many woman and Hispanic owned businesses, as well as many other business owners of varied backgrounds and interests. Some clients are in the idea stage, while others are experienced entrepreneurs. We are looking for mentors who reflect this diversity, and are willing to spend time with business owners to guide them through the complexities of business startup, growth, and expansion. If you have: a) a passion to give-back to the small business community, while also working with a business- minded, experienced, and dedicated cadre of volunteers; b) an understanding of business and management systems; c) problem solving skills; and, d) an ability to communicate ideas and information, without criticism, and that will enable your clients to find their own solutions; -then SCORE will be a good fit for you! If you can spare about 8 hours/mo. you will be rewarded with: a) feelings of accomplishment through the mentoring of clients and contributing to community betterment; b) making new friends; c) the enjoyment of working with colleagues to solve problems; and, d) learning new things from clients and fellow volunteers. SCORE needs bi-lingual mentors who can help aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners whose first language is not English by providing business expertise, support, and the necessary tools to help them reach their goals. As a mentor you will use your industry-based knowledge and expertise to help clients solve problems, increase business efficiency, and assist with developing long-term business plans. Mentors often have significant experience within their field, excellent communication skills, and the ability to dedicate a few hours a week. We’re currently looking for volunteers to work on specific projects. These volunteers are staffed based on their unique skills and are welcome to assist with leadership and chapter support tasks-they really are the backbone of the organization. For example, you might be able to sharpen your email marketing, networking and social media skills while helping your local business community. If you are interested in aiding a local chapter with data and analytics, pulling reports, helping with local events, or serving in other capacities that will make your local chapter more effective, let us know.
