A SCORE mentor is an adviser who helps individuals and small businesses reach their goals. Mentors provide free business advice and education to aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners. As a mentor, you’ll help clients solve problems, make businesses more efficient, and assist with developing long-term business plans. Additionally, you may discover new sources of insight and knowledge to help your own business and leadership style. Teaching others how to manage people or projects, along with illustrating ways to succeed in other aspects of business, could inspire you to continue with your own professional growth-all of this while helping your local community. The ideal mentor is empathetic, flexible, and loves connecting people to the right resources. Mentors often have significant experience within their field, excellent communication skills, and the ability to dedicate a few hours a week. Bring your specialized, deep experience to help small business entrepreneurs achieve success. Today’s small business owners must master many functions to drive greater success and accelerate growth - from building world-class websites to leveraging the power of social media and implementing cloud computing. As part of SCORE’s free mentoring services, you can work directly with an experienced SCORE mentor and their entrepreneur clients to support very specialized areas of small business. As a Subject Matter Expert Mentors (SME), you would be an adjunct expert called in to provide specialized support and advice to assist a SCORE mentor when their client needs a deeper dive on a specific topic. Areas where specialized SME services are needed include (but are not limited to): finance, accounting, human resources management, website design, development, and webmaster skills; social media and digital marketing skills; taxation and specialized finance skills; IT infrastructure and cloud computing understanding and advice. Every SCORE chapter depends on the talent and time of volunteers to help entrepreneurs achieve their dreams of small business ownership. We’re looking for volunteers to work in two areas: Expand our reach to the community as a member of the Marketing Committee. Expand our workshop and webinar program as a member of the Workshop Committee. As a member of a committee, you will help the committee Co-Chairs to establish the mission, strategic direction, tactical plans, and you will support operations of the committee as described in the Committee Charter. Expected volunteer commitment: You agree to commit to at least one year of volunteering. Time commitment is anywhere from a few hours a week to as much as the volunteer can give. General experience desired: Leadership experience: collaboration, goal setting, strategic planning, motivating others is a plus. Previous experience owning or managing a small business is a plus. Previous experience working with volunteers is a plus. Specific experience examples: Digital marketing in any of its forms. Maintaining relationships with other related organizations Presentation skills, both online and in person Developing/adapting marketing materials Curriculum Design.
