Reach Out and Read Colorado partners with health care providers to encourage families with young children to read aloud together, building a foundation for success. Reach Out and Read Colorado empowers health care providers to talk with parents of young children about the importance of reading aloud at health check-ups with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and health care providers, Reach Out and Read Colorado helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills, so children enter school prepared for success.
Reach Out and Read Colorado, is an evidence-based non-profit, that partners with health care providers throughout the state to prepare Colorado's youngest children to succeed in school by distributing books and prescribing families to read together.
Reach Out and Read Colorado is unique in the fact that the model builds on the relationship between parents and medical providers to develop essential early literacy skills, starting in infancy, via the existing health care infrastructure.
By training medical providers to distribute age-appropriate books to young children from age 6 months to 5 years and sharing guidance for engagement with caregivers at well-child visits, Reach Out and Read Colorado is directly impacting childhood brain development through promoting reading aloud and early learning.
